ملخص: The overall project involves the design and construction of a demonstration Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) system, using the Manufacturing A utomation Protocols (MAP) defined by General Motors (GM) corporation. The aim of these protocols is to resolve the major problems of incompatibility of ssystems from different manufacturers, and to allow the linking together of intelligent or semi-intelligent devices. Five computers and two robots are connected through a local area network using map protocols, to evaluate the efficiency of this type of network. The main applications developed include : 1-the robot controlling system in which an order from a customer is sent to the computers controlling robots via a computer network manager, which acts as a task distributor. 2- a file transfer mechanism with a variety of access resuests (read, write, delete, create). 3- and an interconnection between the MAP network and the BITBUS subnetwork. This volum covers the implementation of a microprocessor-based communications interface which satisfies two complete layers of the International Standards Organization's (ISO) seven layer Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model, the physical layer and the data link layer. The protocols used for the two defined sublayers of the data link layer are based on the specification of the Manufacturing Automation Protocols (MAP) namely, the IEEE 802.4 token bus for the Media Access Control (MAC) sublayer and the IEEE 802.2 class 1 Logical Link Control (LLC) sublayer.
