ملخص: The use of ultrasonic testing techniques as a non-destructive method of asessing masonry structures is evaluated. The most important non-destructive testing methods used in structural engineering in general and to masonry structures in particular are discussed. Their relative strengths and weaknesses are highlighted, and ultrasonic techniques are shown to be well suited to the assessment of the masonry columns to which this study is primarily directed. The method of characteristics is used to model waves in prismatic members. Using this technique, the force, velocity, acceleration and displacement conditions in the structure during the unsteady state can be predicted. The effects of variations of geometry and material properties are discussed in detail and alternative boundary conditions are examined. The influence of defects such as cracks and voids is investigated, as is the detection of imperfections such as poor quality of mortar.
